CHICAGO -- A 19-year-old alleged gang member was shot after a reported argument with the girlfriend of a rival gang member Thursday night in the Wicker Park neighborhood on the North Side.

The shooting occurred at 1356 N. Bosworth Ave. at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, according to a Shakespeare District Police captain.

The 19-year-old, a member of the Latin Jivers gang, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was treated and released from Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, Saint Mary Campus, according to police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.
After the teen was talking to the girlfriend of the shooter, a 23-year-old male member of the Harrison Gents street gang, a verbal altercation broke out between the men and the 23-year-old pulled a gun and shot the teen, according to Kubiak.

The captain gave a slightly different version of the story, saying the victim was involved in an argument with the girl.

“She walks away and another guy comes back and shoots him in the leg,’’ according to the captain. The victim suffered a graze wound, he said.

The captain said the Latin Jivers and Harrison Gents are rival gangs.

The captain said no one was in custody as of 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Grand Central Area detectives are investigating.
