A 17-year-old reputed gang member was fatally shot early today after quarreling with another boy on the street near his South Side home, Chicago police said.
The shooting occurred about 1:25 a.m. in the 7900 block of South Paxton Avenue in the city's South Chicago neighborhood, police said.
The victim, Dante Atkins, was standing on the street with another male when the two began shouting at each other until the other boy walked to a nearby car, Officer Laura Kubiak said.
As the car pulled away, at least one occupant of the vehicle opened fire on Atkins, striking him in the chest, according to police.
Atkins, of the 8000 block of South Merrill Avenue, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:19 a.m., according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Kubiak said the victim was a member of the Gangster Disciples street gang. Police had only a vague description of the car, and no one was in custody this morning.
Calumet Area detective were investigating.
